The gif could not be more perfect in describing what just happened.

yay historical linguistics!

This is so cool!

love this

i’m the only one in my family without a strong southern drawl.

They don’t go very in-depth into the Scotch-Irish influence, but monophthogization of /aj/ (i.e. the way some southerners substitute “ah” for “ai”) is straight out of the highlands (e.g. “ah” [ɐː] for “I” [aj], “mah” [mɐː] for “my” [maj]).

FFFFFFUUUU— THIS IS AWESOME.

Ahhh! I love this. I hate so much when people are prejudiced against Southern accents. Here’s a perfect reason not to be. Linguistics are the best!

I’ve been wondering why my listening skills for French and Croatian are so bad. It’s all them damn swishing consonants. Good thing I’m learning both of them at the same time.

“If Snowden had surrendered himself to U.S. authorities, he almost certainly would have faced charges that carry penalties of decades in prison. He might have rationally feared being subject to years of pretrial detention and the kind of degrading treatment Manning faced. And if he had chosen to fight the charges, he would have risked spending decades in prison if he lost.” —Has the US become the type of nation from which you have to seek asylum? (via markcoatney)
