i’m the only one in my family without a strong southern drawl.
They don’t go very in-depth into the Scotch-Irish influence, but monophthogization of /aj/ (i.e. the way some southerners substitute “ah” for “ai”) is straight out of the highlands (e.g. “ah” [ɐː] for “I” [aj], “mah” [mɐː] for “my” [maj]).

Ahhh! I love this. I hate so much when people are prejudiced against Southern accents. Here’s a perfect reason not to be. Linguistics are the best!
I’ve been wondering why my listening skills for French and Croatian are so bad. It’s all them damn swishing consonants. Good thing I’m learning both of them at the same time.
